The Ōwani Line runs from Chūō-Hirosaki Station to Ōwani Station. Because the line passes through apple orchards, it is affectionately known as the “Apple Orchard Railway.” In autumn, passengers can enjoy views of apple trees heavy with fruit lining the route.
During snowy winters, the line is also famous for operating one of Japan’s oldest Russell snowplow trains, which powerfully clears snow from the tracks. In summer, special Neputa Trains decorated with goldfish-shaped neputa lanterns run along the line, while in autumn, apple-themed neputa lanterns sway gently from the cars.
Along the route are shrines and temples such as Daienji near Ōwani Station and Saishōin near Chūō-Hirosaki Station, where Tsugaru Ichidaizama—guardian deities associated with one’s birth-year zodiac sign—are enshrined. Riding the train to visit these spiritual sites is another enjoyable way to experience the region.
