Stove Train

bccb742b2387a616dfa70bc725e0704b.jpeg

The much-loved seasonal Stove Train runs through snowy Tsugaru every winter. Each carriage is heated by a traditional daruma-style coal stove, creating a warm, nostalgic atmosphere as passengers watch drifting snowstorms sweep past the windows.

The Stove Train first began operating in 1930, and the trains currently in service use the fourth-generation passenger cars. The service runs three round trips per day. Dried squid (surume) is grilled on top of the stove, and the carriages become a lively space where travelers and locals naturally strike up conversations.
