Located in the Kitakanegasawa area, slightly inland from the northern coastline of Fukaura Town, this is Japan’s largest ginkgo tree. It is estimated to be over 1,000 years old, stands about 31 meters tall, and has a trunk circumference of roughly 22 meters.
The tree is beautiful in the fresh green season of spring and early summer, but the autumn foliage is not to be missed, when the leaves turn a brilliant golden yellow. The best time to visit is from mid to late November. In the evenings, the tree is illuminated in a special nighttime display known as “Big Yellow,” offering a completely different feeling than during the day. Seeing the massive ginkgo glowing against the darkness is truly breathtaking.
