Showa Daibutsu (Great Buddha) is a colossal likeness of Dainichi Nyorai, located at the Seiryū-Ji Temple in Aomori. Completed in 1984, the Buddha is known primarily as Vairocana in the Sanskrit and this particular Shōwa Daibutsu is the tallest seated bronze statue of the Buddha in Japan. Inside the temple also stands beautiful buildings such as Japan’s forth height five-story pagoda (build in 1996 and made with Hiba wood, or Japanese cypress), a total Hiba-made Kondo (Main Hall) and a red-painted affiliate temple (Kōyasan Betsuin). There are treasures at Kondo that you cannot miss, the “Grand Painting of Descent of Amitabha and the Heavenly Multitude” and the “Amitabha Looking Back Statue”. Visitors can have a Buddhist vegetarian meal (reservation required) and more details can be found at the temple office.
