Lake Towada is located on the border between Aomori and Akita prefectures. It is a typical double caldera lake with water in a mortar-shaped depression formed by volcanic activity about 2,000 years ago. With 400m in height, 46km in circumference and 326.8m in depth, it is a mysterious lake with beautiful indigo and ranks 12th and 3rd in depth in Japan. Lake Towada’s beauty is available all year round: fresh green leaves in spring, red leaves in autumn, and mystical atmosphere in winter. The best season for fresh leaves is from May to June; the fall leaves begin coloring at the beginning of October and the best time is from mid to late October.
