Eroded by harsh winter storms and raging seas of Tsugaru Straight, Hotokegaura is a series of natural rock formations along the sea cliffs. The rocks are made from green volcanic tuff, stretching for 2 km (1.2 miles) along the coast. These natural rocks have 2 opposite images: a rough one in winter and a peaceful one in summer. And if you watch these green and white rocks carefully, you can draw various shapes in your mind. Omachi Keigetsu(1869-1925), a poet of the Meiji Era, was amazed at this “nature’s heavenly creation” and commented that “Gods or devils created Hotokegaura. this place is not of this world.
