Aomori Museum of Art is a modern art museum adjacent to the Sannai Maruyama Jomon archeological site with its goal of introducing arts and culture of northern Tohoku to the world. The museum holds a wide array of artifacts from Japanese paintings to western paintings, as well as modern art pieces. The permanent collection includes three impossibly large paintings by Marc Chagall, that were originally backdrops for a ballet. Other works from Aomori native artists are also displayed in the permanent collection includes woodblock prints and paintings by Munakata Shiko, the pop art and almost cartoonish work of Nara Yoshitomo and monster design prints by Toru Narita.
