The Tsugaru Line opened in 1951 and is affectionately known as the “Crab Line.” It runs 55.8 kilometers from Aomori Station along the Mutsu Bay side of the Tsugaru Peninsula to Minmaya Station in Sotogahama Town. Services are operated using 701 series trains.
In the past, limited express services such as the Hakuchō and Super Hakuchō, as well as the overnight express Hamanasu, connected Honshu with Hokkaido via this line. Since March 26, 2016, however, that role has been taken over by the Hokkaido Shinkansen.
